'Jiban BK resorted to acid attack over unrequited love'

KATHMANDU, March 20: Twenty-seven days after the incident, Metropolitan Police Commissioner's Office (MPCO), Ranipokhari, Kathmandu, has made public after arrest the acid attacker on two school girls at a tuition center in Basantapur, Kathmandu.


The arrested is identified as Jiban BK, 20 of Fulashi-8 of Ramechhap. Police detained BK from his rented room based in Tokha at 11:15 pm yesterday, said AIG Bigyan Raj Sharma, Chief of MPCO, at a press meet organized in the capital on Friday.


According to the statement given by accused BK, Sangita and Jivan's families had been residing at the same house at Jhochhen in Kathmandu since 2013.

Jiban and Sangita's families were not on good terms after their families came to know about their affair. The relationship turned further sour after Jiban had a brawl with Sangita's brother Santosh over consumsion of marijuana in November 2013.


 In the month of May 2014, Jiban left for Sikkim to join the Indian Army but as the things did not turn out as expected he returned to Kathmandu and took a digs in Tokha. Filled with resentment after his love with Sangita turned unreciprocated, he had been looking for a chance to take revenge against her.

According to the police investigation,  Jiban is found to have made attempts twice to attack Sangita. In September 2014, he bought acid from a New Road-based battery shop but his plan did not materialize. Then on Feburay 22, he came over to Jhochhen with the acid he had bought the other day from the same battery shop, looked for Sangita in her room. When he did not find her, he went to A Plus tution center and hurled acid on her in which another student Sima Basnet was also injured.


Acid attack victim Sangita Magar, 16, who is originally from Khaniya-8 Ramechhap and is currently residing in Jaisidewal, and Sima Basnet, 15, originally from Paurahi-1 of Rauthat district and currently residing in Bhimsensthan.


Both the acid attack survivors Magar and Basnet are taking their SLC exams. Magar is appearing the board exams with the help of an assistant from the hospital bed of Sinamangal-based Kathmandu Medical College while Basnet is taking her exams herself from Bir Hospital.
