The jail administration has started keeping records on the inmates´ daily activities to ensure that any untoward happenings in the prison are not repeated. [break]The administration has encouraged the jailbirds in income generation activities such as making bamboo stools and other articles, to maintain peace in the prison by keeping them preoccupied.
The jail administration, which is already cagey following the jailbreak incident three months ago, has been paying a lot of attention to security as more and more troublesome jailbirds from other prisons in the region are being transferred to Jhumka of late.
According to Jailer Ganesh Adhikari, three unruly inmates--Siyaram Paswan, Dipak Pariyar and Lokbahadur Tamang-- responsible for a clash in Udayapur prison on Wednesday were transferred to Jhumka Thursday. Similarly, a quarrelsome group of 11 inmates from Bhojpur prison were also transferred to Jhumak recently.
"The quarrelsome inmates will not change their ways even if they are referred from one prison to another," Tara Nepal, leader of the inmates, said.
"The concerned authorities should ponder a bit before deciding to put difficult jailbirds in the same prison," Nepal added. He was of the opinion that the situation is likely to turn volatile if prisoners who are given to causing trouble are gathered in the same place.
"Maybe because it is the regional prison, most unruly jailbirds are being transferred here. Some jails don´t like to take in such prisoners, but we are accepting them under an agreement with the central jail administration" said Adhikari.
With the trend of transfering jailbirds to Jhumka prison continuing, the number of inmates there has already reached 666, or 166 in excess of capacity.
On November 9, a dozen inmates, including one Bangladeshi and two Indians, broke out of Jhumka after digging an 80-foot tunnel.
