The anomaly was found on Monday after the Department of Commerce and Supply Management (DoCSM) and the Nepal Bureau of Standards and Meterology (NBSM) conducted a market inspection upon receiving complaints from customers.[break]
The monitoring team inspected three jewelry shops: Ganapati Jewellers in New Road, and RB Diamond Jewellers and Tejmin Jewellery in Pyukha.
“We found that Ganapti Jewellers was using weighing machine meant for weighing silver to measure the weight of gold and diamond. Besides, weighing machines used in the shop were not certified by the NBSM,” said Ram Adhar Shah, director general of the NBSM.
The team seized four defective weighing machines from the shop.
Similarly, RB Diamond Jewellers was found using new kind of pocket weighing machine which had not received certification from the NBSM for use. The team has seized two pocket weighing machines from the store.

“We also found that the weighing machine was tampered and was showing excess weight. This means customers who were selling gold were being cheated,” said Prem Lal Maharjan, president of the Consumers Alliance for Consumer Right.
However, no anomaly was found at Tejmin Jewelery.
The team has collected samples of gold and diamond from all three shops to determine their quality.
