Jeevan Baral receives Clinton Award

POKHARA, June 12: Twenty-six-year-old Jeevan Baral of Bajhapatan, Pokhara has received the Clinton Global University (CGIU) Award for his contribution to poverty reduction. The award with a cash price of $2000 will be handed over to Baral by the Clinton Foundation, USA. [break]



Baral is the founder of Alternatives, a youth organization and is the first Nepali to receive the award. He participated in the CIGU- 2009 Conference at Texas, USA this February where he presented a paper on how to reduce poverty in Nepal. He will go to the US again in 2010 to receive the award.







Baral bagged the award from among 800 youths from 60 countries who are working to reduce poverty. He is one of 13 youths who got the award for poverty reduction. The Clinton Foundation gives similar awards to youths who have made considerable contribution in the fields of poverty reduction, education, health, human rights and peace and climate change.



Baral through Alternatives, wants to open Rural Youth Entrepreneurship Development Centers in all VDCs of Kaski.



Baral is currently a bachelor-level student at Prithivinarayan Campus, majoring in Rural Development.



Baral´s parents are ecstatic due to his son´s achievement. “



"I hadn´t believed him in the beginning, but now I know that he was doing real work," says Sita Baral about her son.
