KATHMANDU, July 5: The Judicial Council (JC) headed by Acting Chief Justice Deepak Raj Joshee has decided on Wednesday to probe against Kathmandu District Court Judge Amrit Bahadur Basnet over his controversial decision to grant bail to an accused who faces fraud charges for misappropriating billions of rupees.
According to a source at the JC, a meeting held on Wednesday decided to investigate into the issue. Judge Basnet had released Ram Prasad Shrestha, who has been facing the allegation of cheating Rs 3 billion from various individuals while assuring them of job in Malaysia.
Basnet had released Shrestha for Rs 1 million bail while he has been facing charges of collecting around Rs 2.86 billion from various individuals. The JC meeting has handed the responsibility to its members Ram Prasad Sitaula and Padam Baidik to investigate into the matter.
The government had prosecuted VLN Nepal Pvt Ltd operator Shrestha accusing him of collecting Rs 2.86 billion on the charge of overcharging Nepalis for visa processing. He was arrested in the last week of May.
