Jaywalkers to be fined

KATHMANDU, Feb 22: In yet another significant move to curb road accidents in the capital, Kathmandu Metropolitan Traffic Police Division (KMTPD) has decided to fine pedestrians who cross the road without using overhead bridges from Thursday.



The jaywalkers who do not use overhead bridges in Bhotahiti, Ratnapark and Sundhara for crossing the road will be fined Rs 50, according to KMTPD chief DIG Ganesh Raj Rai. [break]



Those who fail to pay the fine will be kept under detention for two hours, traffic police said.



Earlier, jaywalkers were fined Rs 25 for not using overhead bridges to cross the road.



The traffic police recently launched an anti-drink driving campaign in a bid to curb accidents during the night.
