Doctors involved in the treatment of Shrestha, who was shot at Chandragadhi on April 16, 2006, have recommended immediate surgery of his left leg but he is waiting for financial help to fund the operation.[break]
"The doctors have been asking me to operate it immediately for the past four months but I don´t have money. I am confused how to fund the surgery," Shrestha, who has been honored as living martyr by local organizations in the past, rued.
His treatment was managed by the District Janaandolan Co-ordination Committee and he was helping his mother make ends meet with help from different organizations that have felicitated him as a living martyr. Mechinagar Municipality has been providing him Rs 3,000 per month and Dhulabari Drinking Water Consumers´ Committee Rs 1,500 while the political parties and other organizations have constructed a four-room concrete house at a cost of Rs 1.2 million for him. But the monthly allowances are spent on regular expenses and are not enough for the expensive treatment.
Shrestha of Mechinagar-6 who was at the forefront of a protest on that fateful day has been on crutches since then. The 33-year-old has been getting his leg treated in Siliguri, India and has gone under the knife six times in five years.
He is the only hope of his old mother. "I have been hampered at an age when I have to earn for the family. I am waiting for helping hands to fund my treatment," he added.
He is hopeful that political leaders in Jhapa district who have said that they have taken initiative to make financial arrangements for his surgery, will be able to gather substantial amount. "I don´t know how much the next surgery will cost. I hope it doesn´t go beyond Rs 100,000," he stated.
