JAJARKOT, April 21: Swine flu claimed one more life in Jajarkot district on Tuesday, taking the total nationwide death toll to 25. The seasonal flu has already infected over 10,000 from a dozen VDCs in the district over the past three weeks.
Lalbir Nepali, 61, of Rami Danda died of the flu, according to Bishnu Jyoti, assistant health worker at a health post based in the village. The deceased, who had been suffering from cough and high fever for the last three days, breathed last in lack of proper treatment, said Jyoti.
Five members of the victim"s family have been infected with the seasonal flu, said Prithi Raj Jyoti, a local. According to him, at least 25 patients from Rami Danda VDC are visiting the local health post on a daily basis.
Altogether 19 doctors have been mobilized in 12 affected VDCs of the district to contain the epidemic. Since Sunday, health workers have been providing treatment to patients in the affected VDCs, according to Chief District Officer (CDO) Jagat Bahadur Basnet.
The epidemic has gripped Painka, Pajaru, Archhani, Dasera, Talegaun, Sakla, Nayakwada, Rokaygau, Majkot, Ramidanda, Jungathapachaur and Kortang, among others VDCs, in the district.
Doctors and health workers from the Nepal Army (NA), the Armed Police Force (APF), the Health Ministry and neighboring districts have reached the affected villages to provide treatment to the flu infected locals.
Dr Anil Dangol of NA and Dr Gunanidhi Lohani of the health ministry are mobilizing the health workers and providing necessary instructions and guidance to teams in the field from the district headquarters, according to Dhir Jung Shah, chief of District Health Office, Jajarkot.
Meanwhile, Battalion Chief Pratap Singh informed that 11 patients from Tapuchaur have tested positive for swine flu. "An infected child, who is in critical condition, will be flown to Kathmandu for treatment," he added.
