KATHMANDU, Feb 28: Nepal Institutional School Teachers´ Union (ISTU) has announced a shutdown of all private schools on March 6 to press their demands.

Organizing a press conference in the capital, ISTU demanded the nationalization of all private schools to do away with commercialization and privatization in the education sector.

Among other things, ISTU has also demanded scrapping of the Company Act for private schools and guarantee of salary to teachers as per the government scale. The union has said that it is wrong on the part of the government to allow schools to run under the Company Act.

Addressing the press conference, ISTU president Hom Bahadur Thapa said they are left with no alternative as private schools operating under the Company Act do not pay tax to the government and continue exploiting the teachers in terms of salary.

Speaking on the occasion, president of Nepal Education Republican Forum (NERF) R B Bhandari said parents should stop paying fees to the schools if they do not pay tax to the government. He alleged that private schools that operate as companies have amassed great wealth through the exploitation of both parents and teachers.
