ADELAIDE, Australia, March 15: William Porterfield posted his first World Cup century in an otherwise mediocre batting display by Ireland as it was restricted to 237 against Pakistan in the last game of the group stage.

It was a crucial innings by the Ireland captain, with the winner of the Adelaide Oval encounter advancing to the quarterfinals.Porterfield, who was dropped on 99, was out for 107 when caught by Shahid Afridi off the bowling of Sohail Khan. Wahab Riaz returned the best bowling figures for Pakistan with 3-54.

The Pakistan squad, which has not won a match when batting second at this tournament, will like its chances of chasing down the total, particularly when Ireland's weakness is its bowling.

The winner will play a quarterfinal against Australia next Friday, also in Adelaide.
Ireland 237 all out (William Porterfield 107, Gary Wilson 29; Wahab Riaz 3-54, Sohail Khan 2-44).
