Int'l workshop on climate change begins

KATHMANDU, Oct 5: A two-day international workshop organized by International Federation of Agriculture Producers and Federation of Nepal National Cooperatives on climate change and its impact on Asian agriculture began here on Monday.



Agriculture and climate experts from across Asia will present their papers in the workshop on several issues including climate change and its impact on agricultural productivity, food security, seasonal farming, use of improved seeds and modern equipment and establishment of regional food store.



The workshop will also share experiences on global warming, snow melting, flooding of productive land, rise in water level of rivers and oceans, loss of agricultural productivity, loss of biodiversity, loss of quality of agricultural produce due to excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides and loss of soil fertility.



Inaugurating the workshop, Minister for Agriculture and Cooperatives Mrigendra Kumar Singh called on all to gear up to protect environment as climate change will affect Himalayan countries like Nepal and coastal areas the most.



He said the world was facing the challenge of meeting the food demand of growing population through modern farming and Nepal was committed to take the resources like fertilizers, quality seeds, equipment and expert services to the farmers.



Chairman of the Federation of Nepal National Cooperatives Dipak Prakash Baskota said cooperative movement was instrumental in raising incomes of low and mid income families in the rural areas. He said the cooperative movement will also be used to negate the impacts of climate change and study the impact of climate change on agriculture.



Other speakers including FAO representative called for land conservation, increase in productivity and cooperation at local and global level to secure food security for the Asia region, which is facing the highest population pressure in the world.



Representatives from 12 countries including Nepal, India, China, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Japan, Israel, the Philippines and Thailand are taking part in the workshop.
