Organizing a press meet in the capital on Sunday, Deepak Thapa, president of Kathmandu District Badminton Association, stated that the event will feature boy´s and girl´s players in U-15 and U-17 categories.[break]
Nepal will feature the highest 16 shuttlers, including eight each in boy´s and girl´s category. Eight players each from India and Bangladesh will compete in the event. Nepal is hosting the junior championship for the first time under players exchange program, said Thapa, adding that India and Bangladesh will host the next two editions respectively.
Chelsea International Academy is the chief sponsor of the tournament. Chelsea will provide Rs 500,000 for the tournament. The expected cost of the event is Rs 2.5 million.
According to Chelsea Principal Sudhir Jha, the school had sponsored the event as badminton was a suitable game for all age groups.
Speaking on the occasion Nepal Badminton Association General Secretary Ramji Bahadur Shrestha said that U-15 winner of National Junior Championship to begin in Dhangadi from Monday will get a chance to compete in the event. Remaining players will be selected on the basis of their rankings.
Prakash Badhaur Shahi, the member of Asian Badminton Confederation opined that the tournament will be vital for the development of junior badminton of Nepal. Meanwhile, Nation Sports Council (NSC) Vice President Pitambar Timilsina stated that NSC will leave no stone unturned to make the event successful.
