Int'l invitational volleyball begins Tuesday

POKHARA, Dec 20: The stage is all set for the first edition of Wai Wai International Invitational Women´s Volleyball Tournament to begin from Tuesday at the Pokhara Stadium, Kaski.



The tournament being organized by Western Regional Volleyball Association will feature nine teams including two from abroad. [break]



According to the organizers, all the preparations for the tournament have been completed and four matches will be held on the inaugural day.



Nepal Police Club, Armed Police Force (APF), Gyanu Baba Higher Secondary School, Fishtail Higher Secondary School, Workers Martyrs Memorial Club (Pokhara), Balodaya Higher Secondary School and Tops Higher Secondary School are the teams participating from across the nation. Eastern Railway of Kolkata, India, and Young Sports Club of Phuncholing , Bhutan, are participants from abroad.



"All preparations have been finished and all of the domestic teams have arrived in Pokhara. Teams from abroad will arrive by Tuesday," association´s secretary DB Nepali told Republica.



The tournament will be conducted on rubber mat, first time in a tournament outside the capital.



"I hope that the tournament will energize players and help promote tourism in Pokhara owing to the presence of foreign players in the tournament," Nepali said. "The tournament will also provide opportunity for Nepali players to play against foreigners which they haven´t done in a longtime."



The top four teams will bag a purse of Rs 111,000, Rs 50,555, Rs 20,222 and Rs 10,111 respectively. Likewise, best player, spiker, shooter, blocker, quicker and defense will also be awarded attractive prizes.



The expected cost of the event is Rs 1.3 million. According to Nepali, the amount saved from the tournament will be utilized for constructing an international level volleyball covered hall in Pokhara.
