Int'l day against racial discrimination marked

KATHMANDU, March 21: Speakers at a program have laid emphasis on incorporating Dalit people's rights in the fundamental rights of the constitution.

In course of a rally organized by the National Dalit Commission on the occasion of the International Day against Racial Discrimination, they demanded ending of caste-based discrimination, increasing access of Dalits to every state agency and ensuring fully proportional electoral system, among others.

Commission Chairman Man Bahadur Nepali said that Dalits were deprived of rights for long due to racial discrimination and it was against humanity.

The rally which started from Bhadrakali concluded after reaching Nepal Police Club after passing through New Road, Ratnapark and Exhibition Road.

Some 69 black people were killed by the then government in South Africa in a demonstration organized by demanding the elimination of racial discrimination on March 21, 1960.

The Day is marked across the world since 1990 in memory of the incident when Nelson Mandela was in power. RSS
