Issuing separate statements, the European Union (EU), Japan, India, Norway, Switzerland and the US while pledging support to the peace process have also urged parties to give high priority to the implementation of the deal. [break]
“As friends and partners in Nepal´s development process, we welcome the fresh consensus among the political parties, which we hope will help fully implement the Comprehensive Peace Accord,” said the EU, Norway and Switzerland in a joint statement on Wednesday.
Similarly, Japanese embassy in a separate statement said, “The agreement is a clear embodiment of the constructive spirit of mutual understanding among the political leaders and symbolizes a major breakthrough toward achieving the aspirations of the people of Nepal.”
Welcoming the agreement, India has lauded Nepal´s political parties for resolving outstanding issues. “This agreement provides a firm basis for successfully concluding the remaining aspects of Nepal´s peace process,” India´s External Affairs Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.
Calling the agreement a landmark step, the US has encouraged the political parties to be involved in the implementation of the agreements.
“We commend all parties for their statesmanship and leadership in forging this consensus, which we believe is a crucial step toward ensuring a democratic, stable, and prosperous future of Nepal,” said Victoria Nuland, spokesperson at the Department of State, in a statement in Washington Tuesday night.
Similarly a spokesperson at the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office said in a statement welcoming the agreement urged political parties to continue their statesmanship, courage and flexibility in the coming days and weeks. It also welcomed the parties intention in the agreement to establish the long waited Truth and Reconciliation Commission and Commission on Disappearances, urging Nepal to comply with its international human rights obligations.
