KATHMANDU, Oct 15: Internet connection has been  extended to the remote Tilicho Lake, located in the mountain district of Manang, to cater to the needs of tourists in this high-altitude region.

Cholpa Gurung, ward chairman of Manang Ngisyang Rural Municipality-9, revealed that internet access was introduced to enhance the convenience and safety of tourists visiting the Tilicho Lake area, where high altitude can pose health risks. In an effort to minimize potential issues, Wi-Fi service has been installed to aid visitors in exploring Tilicho Lake.

"We anticipate that the concerns of tourists falling ill or losing their way will be diminished after the introduction of Wi-Fi," Gurung remarked.

Karma Dhendu Gurung, a hotelier, noted that the collaboration between tourism professionals and hoteliers led to the extension of internet services, facilitating tourist activities. The initiative aims to streamline access to information and support for tourists from the moment they arrive in the region. Gurung highlighted that this accessibility will enable coordination between hotels and tourism businesses, allowing for the monitoring of tourists' well-being. If any health issues arise, prompt assistance can be provided to ensure the safety of tourists.

Manang has witnessed a surge in tourist arrivals, with foreign travelers drawn to the Annapurna trail to witness the region's majestic mountains, the unique culture of the Manang people, and its natural beauty. Visitors often embark on adventures like the climb to Thorang Bhanjyang from Manang, followed by a journey to Pokhara via Mustang. These excursions provide opportunities to explore the diverse mountain ranges and peaks in the Manang region.

Bhupendra Gurung, Head of the Tourist Check and Information Center at the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) Area Office in Manang's Dharapani, reported a daily influx of over 200 foreign tourists during the peak tourist season. He anticipates that tourist numbers will rise further between the festivals of Dashain and Tihar.

This well-trodden path connects five districts, including Lamjung, Manang, Kaski, Mustang, and Myagdi. Since the start of 2023, a total of 14,214 tourists have journeyed along this route, predominantly hailing from countries such as Israel, France, Germany, and others.

While the presence of domestic tourists is growing, precise statistics remain unavailable. The burgeoning foot traffic has energized local businesses, further fueling enthusiasm within the region.

In collaboration with the Manang Ngisyang Rural Municipality and the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) area office in Manang, healthcare services are available at temporary health posts to address any illnesses that may affect tourists. ACAP provides valuable health and risk information to visitors traveling to Tilicho Lake and Thorangla Bhanjyang, ensuring their safety during their journey.
