Insurers overwhelmed by Rs 25.87 billion in flood losses

As of August 31, a total of 15 insurance companies reported receiving claims worth Rs 25.8735 billion. Oriental Insurance Company has received the largest share, with eight insured parties filing claims totaling around Rs 13 billion.

KATHMANDU, Sept 2: Preliminary insurance claims filed after the devastating August 26 Bhotekoshi River flood have already exceeded Rs 25.87 billion, according to the Nepal Insurance Authority (NIA).



As of August 31, a total of 15 insurance companies reported receiving claims worth Rs 25.8735 billion. Oriental Insurance Company has received the largest share, with eight insured parties filing claims totaling around Rs 13 billion.


United Ajod follows with Rs 4.97 billion in claims from 38 insured parties, while Sanima GIC has received Rs 2.10 billion from 102 parties. Siddhartha Premier reported Rs 1.88 billion in claims from 67 insured parties, and Shikhar Insurance Rs 1.87 billion from 127 parties.

Other companies have also reported significant claims. Himalayan Everest has received claims worth Rs 640 million from 45 insured parties, while Neco has reported Rs 510 million from 66 parties. Sagarmatha Lumbini has reported Rs 240 million in claims from 32 parties, Nepal Insurance Rs 230 million from 32 parties, and IGI Prudential Rs 180 million from 26 clients.


Smaller claims have been filed with several insurers. NLG has received Rs 110 million from 21 parties, Prabhu Rs 30 million from 14, Rastriya Beema Company Rs 7.6 million from two, National Insurance Rs 5.3 million from two, and Nepal Micro Insurance Rs 500,000 from a single insured party.


Engineering and contractor risk insurance accounts for the largest share, with 52 insured parties filing preliminary claims worth more than Rs 20 billion. Property insurance claims total Rs 2.34 billion from 113 parties, while motor insurance claims amount to Rs 1.55 billion from 313 parties.


Transport insurance claims stand at Rs 890 million from 47 parties, and other categories account for Rs 520 million from 54 parties. Four health insurance claims worth Rs 41.6 million have also been filed.


The NIA emphasized that these figures represent preliminary estimates. Detailed assessment and verification will be required before final payouts are determined.
