"The top priority of the nation at this juncture is to work together to institutionalize the federal democratic republic by taking the ongoing peace process to a meaningful conclusion, promulgating the new constitution and maintaining sustainable peace," the prime minister said in his message issued on the occasion of the 61st democracy day.[break]
He said the significance of democracy day can be realized only if the political parties work together on the basis of consensus and deliver the new constitution.
He urged one and all to show a great resolution for the sake the country´s interest.
The democracy day is marked on Fagun 7 [February third week] in memory of the day when the Rana oligarchy was abolished 61 years ago.
The day was observed throughout the country on Saturday by organizing various programs. A special program along with a parade show by the Nepal Army was held at Tundikhel in Kathmandu.
President Dr Ram Baran Yadav, Prime Minister Khanal, Speaker Subas Nembang and heads of the constitutional bodies attended the function.
Issuing a message on the occasion, President Ram Baran Yadav stressed on the need for unity, consensus and cooperation among the political parties.
While addressing the function Khanal emphasized the need for concluding the peace and constitution building process by ending the ongoing transitional period at the earliest. "I urge all the political parties to uphold the spirit of cooperation and take the country ahead toward forward-looking transformation in a responsible way," he said.
