Inland Revenue Office, Bharatpur best in country

CHITWAN, July 22: The Inland Revenue Office, Bharatpur has been declared as the best among the 49 inland revenue offices throughout the country based on performance indicators.

Director General of the Department of Inland Revenue, Chudamani Sharma, said that the Inland Revenue Office, Bharatpur has topped all other inland revenue offices based on the preliminary data.

According to him, the Inland Revenue Office, Mahendranagar has stood second and the Inland Revenue Office, Butwal third in the ranking.

The Revenue Department sets the performance indicators. Revenue collection is the main indicator while the other indicators include recovery of dues, arrears clearance, taxpayer education program, expansion of the tax net, receipt of income details, investigation, market monitoring, warehouse examination, research, full tax evaluation and additional tax, among others.

The Inland Revenue Office, Bharatpur collected more than the targeted revenue in Fiscal Year 2015/016. It collected Rs 12.165 billion as revenue as against the target of Rs 11.925 billion, which is 102.1 per cent of the targeted amount.

As per the information provided by the Office, it collected revenue Rs 966.29 million towards income tax, Rs 74.274 million towards house rent tax, Rs 54.946 towards interest tax, Rs 751.966 million towards VAT, Rs 10.25 billion towards excise duty, Rs 48.22 million towards health service tax, and Rs 18.955 million towards education tax.

Although very less amount of revenue could be collected in the initial months of the current fiscal year due to the earthquake and the India-imposed border blockade, revenue more than the target was collected in the latter months. Office Chief Tikaram Bhusal said the target could be met also due to the increase in the number of tax-payers. The number of individual tax-payers and the business tax-payers is 3124 and 2264 respectively.

The Office has also cleared arrears of Rs 80 million during the period. The Inland Revenue Office, Bharatpur, which is looking after Chitwan district and the area east of Daunne in Nawalparasi district, has 37 thousand business tax-payers, 25 thousand individual tax-payers and 5,800 VAT tax-payers, it is learnt.
