The United States and more than 50 other countries have recognised Juan Guaidó as Venezuela’s legitimate leader. But others, including Russia, are backing embattled President Nicolás Maduro. Guaidó, leader of Venezuela’s opposition-controlled National Assembly, called for Venezuelans to fill streets around the country on Wednesday to demand Maduro’s dismissal. Maduro is also calling for his supporters to rally. Guaido called for a military uprising on Tuesday, but only a small group of soldiers broke ranks and top military leaders swore loyalty to Maduro.
