At the start of this month, Catalan leaders held an independence referendum deemed illegal by the Spanish government and whose results were labeled invalid by international observers. The region’s bid for autonomy has been one of countless independence referendums held since the Second World War. As the above infographic shows, they have had decidedly mixed results with the crisis in Spain still unresolved.
