According to a press statement issued by Nepal Rastra Bank, a whopping 17 percent rise in food and beverage prices has contributed to the recent inflation, which is more than double the inflation recorded last year.
A rise by 11.7 percent in the prices of non-food items and services also contributed to the inflation. The price of sugar and sugar products sub-group witnessed the highest rise (by 37.6 percent) during mid-Oct to mid-Nov, up by18 percent as compared to the prices recorded during the same period last year.
Likewise, the prices of ghee and oil rose by 31.6 percent over one year. Transport and communications sub group under the non-food items and service group saw a 22 percent price hike.
An area-wise analysis showed Kathmandu had 16.8 percent price hike, followed by 14.2 percent in the hills and 13.3 percent in the tarai.
Last year, prices had shot up by 6.1, 5.7 and 6.6 percent in Kathmandu, hills and Tarai respectively.
During the review month, core inflation was recorded at 13.5 percent as compared to 4.9 percent during the same month last year.
During the same month the National Wholesale Price Index’s annual increment reached at 9.2, up from 7.2 percent last year.
During the period, imports of petroleum products and coal topped the other items with a 25 percent rise which is way higher than 6 percent recorded during the corresponding period of last year.
Likewise, salary and wage index rose by 10 percent, a nominal dip from 10.1 percent last year.
