BIRGUNJ: Over two dozen industries, including Surya Nepal Pvt Ltd, located along the Birgunj-Pathlaiya corridor have remained closed from Thursday after the workers padlocked them demanding a pay hike. [break]

Different trade unions padlocked the industries in a bid to press the management to increase salary and dearness allowance, as fixed by the government.

As a result, Surya Nepal, Agrani Aluminium, seven subsidiary units of Triveni Industry, Saurabh Foods, Ashok Steel and five ghee industries that have been contributing millions of rupees in revenue, have been forced to shut down operations.

Workers said they took such a step after the management did not implement the agreement reached between Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) and the different trade unions regarding the hike in remuneration by Rs 1,300 per month.

The agitating trade unions - UML affiliated General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions, Maoist trade union and Nepali Congress affiliated trade unions had given ultimatum to the management of concerned industries on Monday to comply with the agreement within a couple of days.

“We shut down the industries, as the management did not pay heed to our ultimatum,’’ said Dinesh Rai, a trade union leader.
