KATHMANDU, March 31: The Indian Supreme Court ordered that Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, convicted for his role in the 1993 Mumbai blasts, cannot contest forthcoming parliamentary elections, BBC reported Tuesday.

The court declined Dutt´s request to suspend his conviction saying he had been involved in a "serious offense".

The actor was sentenced to six years in jail in July 2007 for buying weapons from bombers who perpetrated Mumbai serial blasts in 1993.

He has been out on bail since November 2007 and was planning to stand as a candidate from the Samajwadi Party for the Lok Sabha election next month.

The Samajwadi Party wanted to field him from Lucknow, capital of the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.
