KATHMANDU, Oct 21: Legendary Indian comedian and actor Govardhan Asrani passed away on Monday at the age of 84 after a prolonged illness. He died at 3 PM at Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Juhu, Mumbai, and his final rites were held at the Santacruz Crematorium on Monday evening, as reported by Hindustan Times.
“Asrani is survived by his wife, sister, and nephew,” his manager told ANI news agency.

Asrani, a graduate of the Film and Television Institute of India, enjoyed a career spanning over five decades, becoming one of Indian cinema’s most beloved comic actors. He is best remembered for his iconic role as the eccentric jailor in Sholay, and his versatility allowed him to shine in both comedic and serious roles across hundreds of films.
He collaborated with legendary directors like Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Raj Kapoor, earning a reputation as a dependable character actor known for his wit and charm.
In a 2016 interview, Asrani reflected on the changing nature of comedy in films, noting that it had grown increasingly vulgar over the years. He also expressed embarrassment over his role in the adult comedy Mastizaade, where he played Sunny Leone’s father.
Asrani leaves behind a rich legacy in Indian cinema, cherished by generations of audiences for his humor and enduring performances.
