According to locals, Indian security personnel are on high alert on the bordering areas, north of Khalanga, the district headquarters of Darchula. Indian English dailies have stated that security has been tightened till Kalapani."Indian authorities have sent back Nepali laborers working in Gunji, Kuti, Navi, Budi and Kalapani, among other places to Darchula," informed Maha Buddha Singh, a local of Darchula.
In addition, the authorities have been preventing Nepalise from crossing over to India through the cable crossing over the Mahakali River.
The authorities have also strictly implemented permit system for those wishing to cross the border. Security check has been tightened and none is permitted to cross the border without showing permit, according to locals. Locals complained that they have been facing unnecessary hassles due to the implementation of the permit system. Thin presence of Nepali state in the area has also made lives more difficult for locals.
During Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to China recently, the two countries had agreed to expand border trade through Lipu Lekh Pass, which is near the tri-junction between Nepal, India and China. Nepali political parties and other concerned bodies have been protesting against the agreement ever since.
