According to sources, the Indian prime minister met Bhattarai at the summit of the Non-Alligned Movement in Tehran and inquired about the political process in Nepal. [break]
Meanwhile, state-owned Rastriya Samachar Samiti reported from Tehran that Bhattarai and Singh held discussions on various matters of mutual interest. Bhattarai also apprised Singh of Nepal´s political situation and efforts undertaken to forge consensus.
Prime Minister Bhattarai also asked Indian Prime Minister Singh to provide 200 megawatts of electricity to Nepal in line with the past agreement. Indian prime minister has positively responded to Bhattarai´s request, RSS reported.
Though Bhattarai and Singh were supposed to hold a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the summit, the meeting was not held as the Indian side was reluctant to meet Bhattarai, a source from Iran told Republica.
Meanwhile, Bhattarai has stressed the need “or "strengthened multilatera”ism" to fight the menace of global terrorism and various other problems facing the modern world.
Addressing the 16th Summit of Non-Aligned Movement in Tehran on Friday, the prime minister said strengthened multilateralism can only create an environment for lasting peace and security conducive to people-centric development. "It provides us synergy to fight the menace of global terrorism and various forms of transnational crimes, and increased confidence for more rapid disarmament and eventual elimination of weapons of mass destruction including nuclear weapons," he said.
Arguing t“at "faulty progres”ion" of globalization had only benefitted economically advanced countries and the people in high income bracket, the prime minister underscored the need to forge a new global economic order based on equitable distribution of the available resources for optimum benefit of all the people. "Nepal firmly stands with NAM members for global economic justice and shared prosperity for all," he said.
The prime minister also said that North-South cooperation should undergo a qualitative transformation in terms of addressing the needs and priorities of the South. "The South-South cooperation should be diversified and strengthened in a meaningful way to incorporate all possible areas of mutual benefits as a complement to North-South cooperation," he said, while expressing Nepal´s commitment to the principles of NAM.
The prime minister, who led a 14-member delegation to the NAM Summit, is arriving home on Saturday evening.
On the sidelines of the NAM Summit, the prime minister also met UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday.
During the meeting with Ban, the prime minister apprised the Secretary General of the recent developments in the integration of the Maoist combatants into the national army. Views were exchanged in regard to the stalled constitution making process and the resumption of the process from the point it was left out, state-owned news agency, reports RSS.
The UN Secretary General emphasized the need for establishing transitional justice mechanism, including the commission on disappearances, as early as possible.
Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreing Affairs Narayankaji Shrestha met the prime minister of Bagladesh, the president of Iran, Chinese prime minister, president of Venezuala and Iranian petroleum minister.
EU-Nepal joint commission meeting concludes
