KATHMANDU, June 4: The vote count for the India Lok Sabha election is ongoing.

Early trends show the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leading in over 300 seats, while the opposition INDIA alliance, headed by the Congress party, is leading in nearly 200 seats, according to the BBC.

To form a government, a party or alliance must secure more than 272 seats in the 543-member parliament.

This election, the largest in the world, spanned seven phases over six weeks and saw nearly a billion registered voters participate.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seeking a rare third consecutive term for himself and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Over two dozen opposition parties have united to challenge PM Modi and the BJP, aiming to defy the exit poll predictions.
