India delivers 280m tonnes of relief materials

KATHMANDU, April 30: The Indian government has so far provided 280 million tonnes of relief materials, including clean drinking water, milk, biscuits, noodles, essential medicines, tents, blankets and plastic sheets for the earthquake victims.

According to a press statement issued by Indian Embassy in Kathmandu on Thursday, in addition two field hospitals, 18 Army medical teams, 18 Engineering teams, one IAF rapid action medical team and excavator and earth moving equipment have also been flown to Kathmandu and Pokhara in 28 sorties of C-17 Globe Master, IL-76 and C-130 aircraft.Concerned governments of Indian States bordering with Nepal have extended assistance in rescue and relief efforts through the land route. "The government of India remains committed to extending all necessary support and assistance to the people of Nepal in the wake of this devastating earthquake," the statement said.

Indian government had dispatched National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams and special aircrafts with rescue and relief materials shortly after the massive earthquake hit Nepal on April 25. Altogether 16 NDRF teams are working with the Nepali security agencies and have saved 11 lives and retrieved 121 dead bodies from various places in Kathmandu, the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Patan, Bhaktapur and Swayambhu and historic Dharahara tower.
