BIRGUNJ, Sept 12: The Birgunj Correction Center has witnessed heightened tension since Tuesday evening, stemming from a disturbance initiated by a group of juvenile inmates who resorted to vandalism and raised slogans in protest.

A few days ago, 23 children who were transferred from Bhaktapur expressed their urgent desire to be relocated to a different correction center, citing an inability to remain at the Birgunj facility. This relocation came as a result of a prior incident in Bhaktapur where the same group of 23 children had staged a demonstration and vandalized the correction center there.

According to Parsa police officials, some other children within the Birgunj Correction Center also resorted to stone-throwing, seemingly influenced by the agitated group from Bhaktapur. Unfortunately, this turmoil resulted in injuries, including a female police officer who sustained injuries near her eyes. Four child inmates were also injured, though their conditions are reported to be stable.

Tika Kafle, the head of the Birgunj Correction Center, has urgently appealed to the Chief District Officer of Parsa for enhanced security measures. The children incarcerated within the correctional facility resorted to hurling bricks and stones from within, causing damage to the facility.

The situation escalated further as the children began shouting slogans at around 8 PM last night, followed by the sudden commencement of stone-throwing. Subsequently, a significant police force, led by Superintendent of Police Komal Shah of Parsa, was deployed to restore order. While the situation has since calmed down, the exact cause of the protest by the child inmates remains unclear.
