BIRATNAGAR, May 11:  A woman who tested HIV positive has been living in Biratnagar for the past one year after being banished by in-laws. Ganga Ale Magar of Kerabari-7 is living in a rented room here with her one-and-a-half-year-old daughter, who is also HIV positive.

Ganga said her in-laws banished her saying they too could contract the virus. “After my husband Bishnu died, I underwent blood tests and came to know about my positive status,” said Ganga. “My in-laws banished me accusing me of many things,” she added. [break]

While her younger daughter also tested positive, her elder daughter Yunika has tested negative. The in-laws have kept Yunika with them.

Bishnu worked in India for three months after the birth of the elder daughter. The virus spread to Ganga and their younger daughter through Bishnu. After Bishnu´s death and the tests, the in-laws started mistreating Ganga, and even beat her up saying she is a witch.

Ganga, who was born in Chuwade-9 of Udaypur district was married with Bishnu five years ago after falling in love with him. Ganga, who has no source of income, has appealed to rights workers to help her get her share of property.

“If I get some money, I could earn a living by running a shop,” she said.

Like Ganga, Priya Joshi of Bhadrapur, Jhapa, Apsara Pariyar of Biratnagar and Muna Raut, also of Biratnagar, who also left their families for similar reasons after testing positive, have also demanded that they should be rehabilitated.

Of them, Apsara did not face discrimination from her family, but had to leave her village nonetheless after facing discrimination from villagers. Muna, on the other hand, left after being beaten up by her in-laws.
