SINDHULI, Dec 6: Marijuana cultivation is flourishing in Sindhuli every year. Although police have been destroying marijuna in order to discourage planting these illegal plants, cannabis cultivation has been taking place in Marin and Hariharpurgadhi areas of Sindhuli.
On November 7, a team of police personnel destroyed cannabis cultivation in a one-acre area in the upper part of West Bhutaha and Masino Khola in Hariharpurgadhi Rural Municipality-7 of Sindhuli. According to DSP Manoj Kumar Lama of Sindhuli District Police Office, police also destroyed the cannabis planted in Bhuttaha Bhogte area of the same village in the same month.
Similarly, police have destroyed more than 2500 cannabis plants planted in two blocks of land in Kansir and Damar of Hariharpurgadhi Rural Municipality. Despite the continuous efforts made by police to destroy cannabis, the cultivation of these illegal plants has not been stopped. The smugglers have been cultivating cannabis secretly and exporting it to India through various districts of the Terai.
DSP Lama said they have been destroying entire farms that have these illegal plants. “Last Saturday, we destroyed three katthas of illegally planted cannabis cultivation in Garduwa of Marin Rural Municipality,” he said.
However, locals complain that police only destroy the cannabis when they are ripe due to which smugglers continue to cultivate them. A local resident said that action should be taken against the cannabis smugglers even if they are farmers in order to check illegal cultivation of marijuana.
