KATHMANDU, Oct  7: Minister for Water Supply Pradeep Yadav has expressed his commitment to personally visit the homes of locals in Melamchi to request them to remove the blockade that has disrupted the Melamchi water supply.

Minister Yadav mentioned that water supply in Lalitpur resumed after he visited the homes of residents in Dakshinkali and appealed for their cooperation when the water supply was halted due to floods a few days ago. He stated that he will now venture door-to-door in Melamchi to make a similar request.

He acknowledged that the locals of Melamchi have blocked the water supply with four main demands and assured that the government is close to resolving the issue through dialogue. He also stated that consensus between locals is very near.

Minister Yadav urged the people of Melamchi to understand the current situation, referring to the country’s challenging circumstances caused by disaster incidents. He expressed hope that the locals will cooperate during this time of disaster, emphasizing that the talks are progressing towards a resolution.

Minister Yadav revealed that the recent floods and landslides caused around Rs 3.5 billion in damage to the water supply infrastructure alone, including significant destruction in the Kathmandu Valley.

He noted that machinery in Mahakal Ground was damaged, and vital equipment, including the transmission and pumps in Sundarighat, Kirtipur, were destroyed. He said that the government is preparing to undertake the reconstruction of water supply via disaster management efforts.

Minister Yadav added that the damaged infrastructure will be rebuilt in the coming days. “In the meantime, the government plans to repair the water supply machinery in Kathmandu Valley and procure new equipment to ensure smooth operation,” he said.
