Laxmi Intercontinental is followed by Arun Intercontinental in terms of market share. Arun Intercontinental is the authorized distributor of Maruti Suzuki and Suzuki vehicles for Nepal.
The company sold 569 vehicles, which is 14.3 percent of the total vehilces sold. Tata and Ford, which sold 429 units and 418 units, come third and fourth in the market share tally.
“Thanks to painstaking market research and necessary preparation, we have been able to achieve the position and we´ll do better in the days to come,” said Sunil Chhetri, manager at Go Ford, authorized distributor of Ford vehicles for Nepal.
Ford, which was introduced in the market in November, 2010, is selling the fastest and claims 10.5 percent of the market share. In the fifth position stand Kia, which now holds 7.2 percent market share.
In the 10 months, 3,979 private vehicles were sold in the Bagmati zone.
In the year 2010, 6,606 units of vehicles were registered, a drop of almost 40 percent, so far. Similarly, in 2009 and 2008, the number of vehicles registered were 5,628 and 3,857 respectively.
Hyundai had 45.44 percent market share in 2010, 55.95 percent in 2009 and 34.59 percent in 2008. “Fall in market share was seen because till 2009, Hyundai had two authorized distributors in Nepal and the vehicles were also registered through the other distributor,” said Rupesh Sharma Bhatta, senior manager for planning & development at Laxmi Intercontinental. If the sale of vehicles by Laxmi Intercontinental alone is considered, the company has maintained a stable market position.
However, some portion of the market share of the market leaders has been won away by new brands that have recently been introduced. The brands that were introduced in 2010 were Volkswagen, Ford and Fiat, which have already been able to establish themselves in the market.
