Humanitarian Staging Area set up at TIA

KATHMANDU, March 26: The Humanitarian Staging Area (HSA) has been set up at Tribhuvan International Airport today. The United Nations World Food programme (WFP) together with Ministry of Home Affairs and Civil Aviation Authority, have jointly set up the area. The area was set up with the generous support of UK Aid and DFID.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Bamdev Gautam inaugurated the area.The area was set up for the first time under the leadership of Ministry of Home Affairs. It was initiated in 2013 by WFP and Logistics Cluster to develop three Humanitarian Staging areas throughout the Kathmandu Valley from which strategic response in the event of a large-scale emergency, such as an earthquake or flooding will be mobilized.

The Home Ministry has informed that the preparations for setting up such areas are under the progress at Tribhuvan University central campus premises, Kirtipur and at Khumaltar, Lalitpur and would be expanded in different 83 places inside the Kathmandu valley and outside the valley in major cities too.

Training has also been managed to strengthen the capacity of Ministry of Home Affairs, Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, and Red Cross among other stakeholders through the area.

The area would storage the foods, logistics, first aid and medicinal property for about 50,000 people for 30 days.

While inaugurating the area, DPM Gautam said that the country has been facing different natural disasters like fire outbreak, floods among others and resettlement task was more challenging than rescuing and providing reliefs to the victims. DPM Gautam urged all to be alert on the possible disasters and its effects.

Similarly, Minister for Culture Tourism and Civil Aviation Deepak Chandra Amatya said that the area would support the victims.

On the occasion secretary at the Home Ministry Surya Silwal informed that the Disaster Management Act was under progress of amendment.

WFP Assistant Executive Director and CFO, Manoj Juneja, and Dr Gail Marzetti, Head of DFID were present as special guests. RSS
