Over 800 infringement cases in the past six months
POKHARA, Jan 2: Cases of human rights infringement have increased in the districts of western development region of late. Over 800 human rights violations were recorded in the western districts in the past six months, a report shows.
According to Informal Service Center (INSEC), an NGO working in the sector of human rights in Nepal, a total of 803 people faced human rights violations from July end to December 2017 by non-state sides.

The report shows that women are especially vulnerable to such incidents. Among the total cases of human rights violations, 746 victims were women while the remaining 57 were men.
Likewise, the state side committed a total of 105 cases of human rights violation in the same period, according to the report. Four women and 101 men were the victims.
Shiva Hari Khakurel, coordinator of INSEC Pokhara, presented the report and said human rights infringement is has been rampant. “Human right is a serious issue and every stakeholder needs to take it seriously,” he said, adding that awareness is needed to lessen such violations.
Nitu Gartaula, acting director of the Pokhara-chapter of the National Human Rights Commission said while giving justice, none of the victims should be judged by their ranks and social standings. “We have to provide the service based on the needs rather than looking at the victims' social standings.”
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Birendra Kumar Basyal of Province-4 office, they are providing human rights friendly services to the service seekers.
“Police personnel are careful not to commit any infringement of human rights. If personnel are found guilty, their promotion will be stopped and they will be deprived of other services as well,” said DSP Basyal.
DSP Khadka Bahadur Khatri of Kaski chapter of District Police Office also said they have taken measures to correct potential human rights violation from their sides to make the office more friendly and sensitive to human rights issues.
