KATHMANDU, June 10: A meeting of the High Level Political Committee (HLPC) on Monday decided to entrust the government with the task of finalizing election-related laws as the top leaders failed to forge consensus on the disputed issues.

Talking to media persons after the meeting, CPN-UML leader Raghuji Panta said the parties, however, will give their respective suggestions on the threshold and other contentious issues to Chairman of Interim Election Council of Ministers Khil Raj Regmi and that the government will take an appropriate decision based on the suggestions from the parties. Panta also said that there has been an understanding reached among the parties that 2 to 5 percent threshold provision will be adopted in the later elections after the promulgation of new statute through Constituent Assembly.

The HLPC member parties are at odds over some provisions of election-related laws floated by Election Commission such as on barring a candidate with criminal background from running in election, and making public the aspiring candidates´ property details prior to the filing of candidacy.

The UCPN (Maoist), Madhes-based parties and some fringe parties are against the proposed provisions while NC and UML are insisting on introducing the provision.
