HLA test first time in Nepal

KATHMANDU, June 2: The kidney patients will no longer have to go to India for Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) test. Kidney patients can undergo the HLA test in the country, thanks to the Aarogya Foundation, which has established for the first time in the country an advanced laboratory that will start provided services within next two weeks.



The HLA test identifies antigens on the white blood cells that determine tissue compatibility for organ transplantation.



The test is also performed for kidney, bone marrow, liver, pancreas, and heart transplants.



Aarogya Foundation, a non profitable social welfare organization, said the establishment of the lab will be a milestone for kidney transplantation in Nepal.



According to Dr Pukar Shrestha, general secretary of the foundation, the patients will get accurate result from the Rs 20 million laboratory on the very next day, at a cheaper rate.



The patients have to pay Rs 55,000 in India and wait for two weeks to get report.
