RUKUM, Dec 3: A seven-year-old girl, who was born with HIV in Chaukhawang village of Rukum, has been left to fend for herself after the death of her parents.

Krishna Budha has been living at her maternal grandparents´ home after her mother Kamala died of AIDS five months ago. Krishna´s father Gan Bahadur, who presumably contracted HIV while working in India, had died before Kamala. [break]

Gan Bahadur died of AIDS in Kharibot of Salyan while returning from India.

Krishna tested positive for HIV only when she was taken to the district hospital by her maternal grandmother Rewati Khadka for treatment of sores that developed all over her body. Rewati feels devastated after her granddaughter tested positive for HIV. "My dream of bringing up my grandchild has been shattered," she said.

district hospital of Rukum has referred Krishna to Zonal Hospital in Nepalgunj. However, Rewati has no money to take Krishna to Nepalgunj. Rewati said Krishna´s father and mother spent all their savings for their own treatment. "They left nothing for Krishna," she said.

According to District Hospital of Rukum, 33 villagers have tested positive for HIV. However, only six of them have openly come forward for treatment.
