Historic basketball win for Nepal women

SINGAPORE, July 3: Nepali women´s basketball team has created history beating Kuwait 27-32 in the First Youth Asian Games being held in Singapore.



The women´s basketball team, in their first ever outing, had lost all their previous league matches prior to the encounter with Kuwait. [break]



Samichin Bista scored 11 points while Shiwa Karmacharya scored 9. Team captain Nora Gurung contributed 8 valuable points.



"We are very excited by the win. In the previous games, we played according to plan but could do nothing against strong teams like Japan and Korea", team captain Gurung said after the win. Coach Bipendra Maharjan also expressed his satisfaction with the result. "Kuwait is a team rated far above us. This win signals that the coming days will be bright for women´s basketball in Nepal", he said.



Meanwhile, the men´s basketball team were handed a 28-23 defeat by Qatar. Siddhartha Maharjan top-scored for Nepal with 11 points while Bidi Ratna Tamrakar scored 8 points.



In triple jump, Nepal´s man Sajan Sunuwar was disqualified after failing in two successive attempts. Saturday will see Nepali players participate in swimming and table tennis events. Swimming sensation Karisma Karki will take to the pool in the 50m freestyle.
