KATHMANDU, Jan 6: Local residents have obstructed helicopter flights in the Sagarmatha region, prompting operators to suspend operations. The Airlines Operators Association of Nepal (AOAN) cited heightened security concerns as the reason behind the decision.

On Sunday, the association revealed that local groups had placed flags on helipads in the Khumbu region to block landings. It warned that such actions left helicopters without safe emergency landing options.

Local groups have issued direct threats to flight crews, warning of action if helicopters attempt to land. Statements from local clubs, youth groups, and other stakeholders, shared through various media outlets, have pressured operators to suspend flights until they receive full safety assurances.

Airlines flying in the region have announced plans to gradually halt operations if authorities fail to ensure security. Organizations such as Sagarmatha National Park, Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality, and other local associations have raised concerns over the environmental damage caused by helicopter flights, including harm to forests, wildlife, and habitats.

These groups have enforced a ban on helicopter operations, claiming that commercial flights pose serious challenges to conservation efforts. Despite several meetings between the AOAN and relevant authorities, no conclusive resolution has been reached to lift the restrictions.
