Heart surgery service closed at Gangalal due to lack of oxygenator

KATHMANDU, July 20: Shahid Gangalal National Heart Center has stopped cardiac surgery services due to the lack of an oxygenator. According to the hospital administration, 45 patients who were admitted to the hospital have returned home after the service was stopped.

KATHMANDU, July 20: Shahid Gangalal National Heart Center has stopped cardiac surgery services due to the lack of an oxygenator. According to the hospital administration, 45 patients who were admitted to the hospital have returned home after the service was stopped.


An oxygenator machine removes carbon dioxide from the blood and adds oxygen during heart surgery. During heart surgery, the work of the heart and lungs should be performed artificially with the help of equipment.

According to the doctors, the oxygenator device is used only once per patient. The price of this device is up to Rs 50 thousand.


The hospital has been performing six to eight heart surgeries daily. As many as 195 heart surgeries were performed last June. There are 150 oxygenators used for children. An oxygenator is used in open heart surgeries.
