As a result, the teaching hospital in Nepalgunj has been receiving an increasing number of people from the mid and far west. [break]
"We have been receiving 20 to 40 people every day coming from the hilly districts of the mid and far west with complaints of chest pain, rise in heart beats, respiratory problem and high blood pressure," said cardiologist Dr Milan Prakash Shrestha.
The teaching hospital has been receiving heart patients from Humla, Jumla, Kalikot, Jajarkot, Dang, Surkhet in the mid-west and from Achham, Bajura, Kailali and Bajhang in the far west.
Heart disease was common with people suffering from high-blood pressure and diabetes and normally people above 60 years, but the recent trend is showing people below 40 years too suffering from the problem.
Dr Shrestha attributes this to consumption of tobacco and excessive meat, tension and lack of physical exercise.
Treatment of heart disease requires the services of specialists. However, the hospitals in west Nepal have very few heart specialists or cardiologists.
As a result, heart patients in this part of the country are deprived of services by cardiologists.
