KATHMANDU, Jan 5: The much-awaited hearing on Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane's citizenship case has started today at the Supreme Court (SC).

A constitutional bench of the SC comprising Acting Chief Justice Hari Krishna Karki and Justices Ishwar Prasad Khatiwada Dr Anand Mohan Bhattarai, Anil Kumar Sinha and Prakashman Singh Raut, began the hearing on the case.

The SC had conducted a hearing on the case on December 21 and decided to listen to the arguments of both sides on the matter of granting an interim order or not for today. It is said that there will be a debate on whether or not to issue an interim order today.

Advocates Raviraj Basaula, Yuvraj Poudel, among others, filed a writ petition questioning the election of Lamichhane, who is also the chairman of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, to the House of Representatives.

The petitioners have demanded the cancellation of the position of Home Minister Lamichhane, stating that he established a political party, contested the House of Representatives election and became a member of parliament without acquiring the Nepali citizenship.
