“The ceremony will officially begin with a cultural parade at 10 in the morning,” said Kumbha Raj Gurung, acting president of Tamu Hyul Chhonjadhin, the umbrella organization of Gurung community across the country.

Stall serving food items such as dhindo, sel roti, rice, potato curry and home-made alcohol would be placed at Khulamanch as part of the festival, informed Gurung. Similarly, dohori song competition, and cultural dances would also be performed. Around 150 volunteers would be deployed at Tundikhel for the festival.

“We expect participation of people from all community as the government has listed the festival among the national festivals,” said Journalist Danda Gurung, who is also the member of the organization committee. He added that community in ancient age divided their calendar into cycles of 12 years. Each of which was named after the mythical bird garuda, serpent, horse, sheep, monkey, bird, dog, deer, mouse, cow, tiger and cat.

“In the early days, the same calendar was used to determine people´s age,” he added. Each year is marked by the name of particular animal and is arranged in a circle, in a fashion similar to the Tibetan calendar. The government declared public holiday in Lhosar three years ago.
