KATHMANDU, March 23: CPN-Maoist Secretary Dev Gurung said on Saturday that his party would not participate in the upcoming election without rectification in the 25-point agreement reached between the major three parties -- UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress and CPN-UML -- and the United Democratic Madhesi Front.

Addressing a function at the Reporters´ Club in Kathmandu, he termed the agreement a “coup”. “Constitutional difficulties cannot be removed on the basis of the agreement. [break]

Holding election in the current situation would be unconstitutional,” added Gurung arguing that an election held by violating constitutional provisions can not be termed a democratic one. He also likened the proposed election to the election held by former King Gyanendra.

“We will launch strong protests against election,” said Gurung. He said that the major parties intend to take a regressive move as they had dissolved the Constituent Assembly.

“The agreement is illegitimate,” said Gurung. He also argued that the solution to the political deadlock should be sought through consent of all the political parties represented in the erstwhile Constituent Assembly.
