KATHMANDU, Aug 10: The Guheshwori Wastewater Treatment Plant at Guheshwori Phant is treating 32.4 million litres of wastewater daily, according to plant officials.
Ram Kumar Shrestha, chief of the plant, said construction of wastewater treatment plants has begun at several locations across the Kathmandu Valley. “Construction is underway at Sallaghari, Kodku, Dhobighat, Gokarna and Hanumanghat,” Shrestha said.

He stressed the need for additional wastewater treatment plants to help keep the rivers and environment of the Kathmandu Valley clean.
Shrestha also emphasized the need for separate pipeline systems for wastewater and rainwater so that treatment plants can operate at their full capacity. He said efforts are being coordinated with local governments to develop such systems.
According to Shrestha, wastewater treatment is often complicated by the presence of materials such as sand, bricks and even dead animals. He attributed the problem to the combined flow of sewage and rainwater into treatment plants through the same drainage system.
He called for improved drainage infrastructure and separate systems for sewage and rainwater to make wastewater treatment more efficient.
