KATHMANDU, Dec 1: The Conflict Victims National Society (ConViNS), on organization of the victims of the insurgency, has asked the government to take strong steps to return the properties seized by the Maoists to the rightful owners and distribute relief packages to those injured, the kin of the deceased and the internally-displaced.

In its statement issued Thursday, ConViNs has expressed disappointment at the widespread belief that the peace process will reach a logical conclusion once the government manages the weapons of the Maoists, saying such a belief has left the conflict victims neglected. [break]

ConViNS is led by Nepali Congress (NC) leader Kul Bahadur Gurung, while Binaya Dhawj Chand, another NC leader, is its general secretary.

Some 43 bighas [29.12 hectares] of land belonging to Chand and his kin has been seized by the Maoists in Bardiya. On November 26, his land was formally returned by the party establishment, but the party hard-line faction seized the land again.

The organization has stated that the Maoist-led government has neglected the real victims by incorporating even those involved in the ´so-called people´s war´.

The statement states that the seven-point peace deal had given a hope that the seized properties would be returned to the owners, but their hopes were shattered as another faction of the Maoist party seized even the already returned land.

The organization has stated that the seven-point deal on the returning of the seized properties cannot be implemented without taking stern action against the guilty.
