KALAIYA, April 30: Police recently arrested a 25-year-old youth while marrying a 12 -year-old girl from the marriage ceremony venue at Subarna rural municipality-3 in Bara district.
Nepal outlawed child marriage in 1963 and the country's law says that both men and women have to be 20 years of age before they can legally marry.

Police, acting upon a tiff, held Ram Narendra Prasad Yadav of Balirampur-9 in the district and took the child bride under their protection while the marriage ceremony was being held at last night.

Organizing a press conference here today, Superintendent of Police (SP) Narendra Uprety shared that the parents of the both bride and groom as well as the priest had fled as the police reached the scene.

The bride will be booked as per the law pertaining to the Muluki Ain's (General Code)'s marriage column. Search for those absconding is underway, police said.
According to the latest report of the Human rights Watch released in September last year, almost 40 per cent of girls married before the age of 18. RSS
