BIRATNAGAR, May 25: A groom who walked out of his wedding after the bride's family could not meet his dowry demands was arrested by police on Thursday.
Laxman Rajbanshi of Jahada Rural Municipality-4 of Morang had walked out from the wedding ritual halfway demanding more dowry than presented by the bride's family. Both the families had fixed the wedding date for May 17. According to police, expressing his dissatisfaction toward the dowry presented by the girl's family, Rajbanshi had demanded a motorcycle, a gold chain, a dining table among others.
Ghanshyam Shrestha, spokesman of the District Police Office, Morang informed Republica that the wedding had already commenced as per the Hindu ritual when Rajbanshi suddenly refused to take part in the remaining process. He walked out of the Mandap (tented structure where wedding rituals are conducted) after the bride's family stated that they were unable to meet the additional demands due to their poor financial status.
Police said they are investigating into the case by keeping Rajbanshi in police custody.
